Sandy: Two crowns in the bottom left side of my mouth were replaced today because I chipped a chunk off, with what, I have no idea. It’s amazing that the old ones can be removed and new ones made all within a couple of hours. Instead of making a mold, the dentist’s assistant took 3D photographs of the area before and after removing the crown and used CAD/CAM and other computer software to accurately shape, then mill the crown. I didn’t ask but I’m guessing the assistant had to be trained because now s/he is also part technician. It’s similar to my job as a graphic designer. In the past we depended on specially trained professionals to retouch photographs, illustrate and do the typesetting. Now graphic designers do it all but we don’t get increased compensation. Computers have been instrumental in redefining job responsibilities. Should we be frightened that someday we won’t be needed for jury duty anymore?
[ Why do I keep drawing white things? This tooth was really hard to render. ]
