Day 304 : Halloween

304halloween

Sandy: We have great memories of Halloween when the children were young. For many years we would go house-to-house with our friends in their neighborhood in Palo Alto. I would look forward to making costumes for the kids, whipping out their fantasy character. The most difficult to make was Lumière from Beauty and the Beast. While in First grade, my son had such a strong desire for a “Mohawk” haircut that I agreed he could have one for Halloween as long as he had the Mohawk cut off by school on Monday morning. I’ve never been fond of cutting faces into pumpkins but the picture is my attempt using my left hand. Considering my pumpkins never looked great, this is pretty good. The oyster knife, zester and natural blemishes of the pumpkin helped. It was suppose to look like a zombie but he looks too happy and silly.

Day 303 : toons

303toons

Sandy: There are quite a few left-handed cartoon and animated characters. One theory is when a cartoonist is drawing them s/he draws their writing hand on the same side as her/his writing hand. But if that were true, and the cartoonist is right-handed, all the characters would be left-handed and none would be right-handed. Another theory is when drawing a hand doing something complicated, it’s easiest to pose one’s own non-dominant hand as the model thus lefties will tend to draw a righty hand and righties will tend to draw a lefty.

It would make sense that the cartoonist Cathy Guisewite and her comic character, also named Cathy, are both left-handed. And the creator of The Simpsons, Matt Groening, might want left-handers to be represented since he is left-handed thus reflected in Bart Simpson, Ned Flanders and occasionally Marge. Other left-handed characters – Arnold from Hey Arnold!, Chuckie from Rugrats, Chris Griffin from Family Guy, Doug Funnie from Doug. I just glanced at a list of left-handed Anime characters and did not verify through other sources but there seem to be quite a lot of left-handers or appear to be because they fight left-handed. It could be they are portrayed as left-handed fighters because in close combat, left-handers are said to have an advantage.

Jim Henson puppeteered with his right hand though some people thought he might be left-handed. From what I read, if the puppet was left-handed then the puppeteer was most likely right handed, due to the fact that they control the puppets face with their dominant hand and control the hand of the puppet with their other hand. Kermit the Frog, a character in Jim Henson’s Muppets, is left-handed as are the Muppet guitar players. One of the Muppet puppeteers, Louise Gold, is left-handed and the Muppets she controlled were right-handed.

Day 302 : AttraCTION

302action

Sandy: Do lefties attract lefties? In film there are many left-handed actors who have shared the spotlight. Ben Stiller directed the comedy film, Zoolander, which starred three left-handers – Will Ferrell, Milla Jovovich and Owen Wilson. Seinfeld’s TV show starred left-handers Jerry Seinfeld and Jason Alexander. Matthew Broderick and wife Sarah Jessica Parker are left-handed. Shirley MacLaine and Julia Roberts were co-stars in Steel Magnolias. Left-hander Tom Cruise was once married to left-handed Nicole Kidman. Alfred Hitchcock frequently had left-handed lead actresses in his films – Tippi Hedren, Kim Novak, and Eva Marie Saint – as well as Cary Grant and Anthony Perkins. Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne and Joe Pantoliano co-starred in the series of Matrix films. Keanu also played opposite of Diane Keaton in Something’s Gotta Give. Ray Liotta and Robert DeNiro were pals in the film Goodfellas. Tom Cruise has co-starred with quite a few lefties – Christian Slater, Nicole Kidman, Michelle Monaghan, Julianne Moore, Robert Redford, Ben Stiller. It’s kind of fun to see the match ups.

Day 301 : 888.3737.888

301trafficking

Sandy: Today is not about right or left hand but of human trafficking. A few weeks ago I attended a luncheon hosted by a friend. Every year she enlists incredible people to speak about domestic violence. This year the topic focused on the horrible illegal business of human trafficking. There are a staggering twenty-seven million slaves in the world, more than any time in human history. It’s a 32 billion dollar profit business. Children are the fastest growing product. We hear about children working in garment factories but don’t think about things we eat. About 70% of African chocolate is harvested by slaves. It is scary to know that Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego, California are 3 of FBI’s 13 highest child sex trafficking areas in the nation. And there were recent busts in the greater Bay Area – Walnut Creek and San Jose.

It is difficult to identify trafficking victims. Most times victims don’t realize they are victims since they are surrounded by like people in their situations and environment. Possible clues would be: accompanied by a controlling person; lack of control over money, movement (transportation, travel), I.D.; lives and works in same place; inability to leave job (debt to employer); fear, depression, overly submissive, bruises.

What can we do to change? Buy fair trade instead of products that use slave labor. Don’t support prostitution services, 1.5-2 million are runaways from home, 1/3 are trafficked; pimps make $500 tax free from 4 prostitutes. Large companies will eventually make the change if they get feedback that their product is not acceptable so don’t villainize them. For example, make others aware that Grand Theft 4 is sending bad messages in their games – it gives points for having sex with prostitute, but worse still is you get more points for throwing her out of the car.

Think about how many slaves work for you. Take the test on slaveryfootprint.org

Day 300 : KC

300kc

Sandy: Wow – day 300! Only 65 more days to go!

I didn’t like my name when I was young. Sandra sounded prissy to a grade schooler. My favorite book was about a horse named Casey. Since my middle initial was K and my last name began with the letter C, I asked my friends and family to call me KC. It lasted about two days. No one could remember nor understood why I wanted to make the change, thus it didn’t stick. A lot of actors were encouraged by their agents or the movie studios to change their names so they would be more marketable and sound glamorous, and it’s still common today. Here are some left-handed exampes: Angelina Jolie = Angelina Jolie Voight; Tom Cruise = Thomas Cruise Mapother IV; Greta Garbo = Greta Lovisa Gustafson; Judy Garland = Frances Gumm; Whoopi Goldberg = Caryn Johnson; Goldie Hawn = Goldie Jean Studlendegehawn; Rock Hudson = Roy Harold Scherer Jr; Marilyn Monroe = Norma Jean Mortensen Baker; Mickey Rourke = Philip Andre Rourke Jr.

Day 299 : kidney

299kidney

Sandy: I attended the National Kidney Foundation’s (NKF) 25th anniversary San Francisco Authors Luncheon today. The NKF serves millions of people with kidney disease and raises awareness for the 73 million Americans who are at risk. There are five progressive levels in kidney disease. It cannot be reversed so early detection is critical in order to slow or stop its progression. The patient speaker had kidney failure after being diagnosed with Lupus. She talked about the amount of energy and drive she was expending that could have eventually led to her demise but prudently listened to her family and doctors who mapped out a healthier, still active lifestyle. Her blog about living a low-sodium life is revered by many – sodiumgirl.com.

One of my mother’s very good friends, K, had kidney disease. I remember when I was young, K stayed with us after having a kidney transplant. She recovered and seemed pretty healthy for many years. But what I didn’t know was what it was like for Auntie K every time she had dialysis. It is so brutal and draining, literally. For my birthday once, she took me to Joseph Magnins so I could choose anything I wanted. It was so special and is one of my cherished memories.

Day 298 : sports bra

298sportsbra

Sandy: When I was shopping for a sports bra yesterday, I was pleased to find that some are now being made with a hook and eye closure. Seems like a no brainer. The six I’ve been rotating between are made really well and I haven’t shopped in over 10 years for a sports bra. To put on and take off, I have to pull mine over my head. A couple of them don’t stretch that much so when I take them off, I feel like a pretzel that is about to snap. A couple of them don’t stretch that much so when I take them off, I feel like a pretzel that is about to snap. How was it decided the the right hooks into the left eyelets rather than the hooks positioned on the left and the eyes on the right? Is it considered right-handed?
