Art deco covered a short period of time, 1925 – 1940. Characteristics of art deco incorporated into a building’s design were hard-edged geometric shapes (chevrons, zigzags, lightning bolts), overlapping images, stylized sunrise, floral and fauna patterns inspired by Native American art.
Sandy: I walked over the lovely and grand Golden Gate Bridge on it’s 50th anniversary. What a treat it was to gaze up at it’s splendor while walking down the middle of the road.
Kelly: I went to the Fox Theater in Oakland for the first time a few months ago and was completely surprised at how beautiful the building was. It was built in 1928 and though the majority of it is Art Deco it does have Indian Moorish, Medieval and Baghdadian touches as well. It closed in 1966 and didn’t open again until February 5, 2009 after a long remodel. The band I saw has been forgotten but not the building.
Sandy’s year long journey – going from being a right-hander to left-hander, and Kelly’s parallel trip as a left-hander doing things as a right-hander.
